Using the ground power unit is helpful to practice "button-ology" in the airplane on the ground. There is no charge for time spent on the ground (assuming you follow this procedure and do not turn on the ALT 1 and/or ALT 2 switch, which starts the Hobbs meter).
Also consider using the simulator for practicing not only ground "button-ology," but in-flight procedures as well.
See the following sections of the Cirrus Pilots Operating Handbook for reference information:
- Ground Service Receptacle on page 7-75.
- Application of External Power on page 8-10.
To use the club's ground power unit with the Cirrus:
- Remove the ground power unit from the bottom drawer of the desk that has the airplane log sheets on top of it. It's in a box.
- Using a Phillips screwdriver from the top drawer of the desk, remove the ground service receptacle cover on the left side of the cowling by turning the camlock 1/4 turn counter-clockwise, then removing the cover.
- Verify all switches in the airplane are Off.
- Plug the large plastic power adapter into the ground service receptacle.
- Plug in the ground power unit using an extension cord.
- Turn on the power switch on the ground power unit.
- Turn the BAT 1 switch to On. (The ground power receptacle is wired through the BAT 1 switch; do not turn on the BAT 2 switch or either of the ALT switches.)
- Turn the Avionics switch to On.
Reminder: Do not turn on the ALT 1 and/or ALT 2 switch, as this will start the Hobbs meter. You will be billed for any time on the Hobbs meter.
To disconnect the ground power unit:
- Turn all switches in the airplane Off.
- Turn off the ground power unit.
- Disconnect the connector from the ground service receptacle.
- Slide the cover into position on the cowling--it may take a little bit of fiddling to get it lined up. Do not force it.
- Using the screwdriver, turn the camlock 1/4 turn to the right to secure the door.
- Unplug and put away the ground power unit back in the drawer.
- Neatly coil the extension cord and put it near the side of the hangar.
